This liquor store is a mile or two outside Colorado City.

Colorado City/Hildale. Home of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints.

Inhabitants are better known as the FLDS.

You can barely see a woman in her prairie dress up on the balcony.

Colorado City has very wide streets, most of them dirt.

All the boys and men have to wear long sleeved shirts and keep the collar buttoned up.

Here's a woman going into the post office. I guess the FLDS is looser than some religions, at least the women can drive (if their husband/father lets them).

The FLDS controls the towns of Hildale and Colorado City. This maybe the only outside governmental influence in town.

It has a nice rural, ranchy feel.

There are lots of wide open spaces in Hildale/Colorado City.

These two towns are surrounded by mountains. Why are the streets so wide?

There are some trailers sprinkled throughout the two towns. Here was a little enclave.

Colorado City is an odd assortment of mostly big houses, a few mansions and some trailers.

And LOTS of big fences. They don't appreciate outsiders and will let you know it.

The houses cover a wide range of appearance, some nice, many struggling for adequacy.

This is a more 'normal' looking abode. It's large but not huge, and it's finished as well as landscaped.

There aren't many stone houses up in Colorado City, mostly what look like wood and stucco.

This is a Super Fancy house. It's very well done, wonder who lives in it?

This another view of the fancy house in the last picture. There is no other house in town that I saw with such elaborate decorative touches. Wonder why this one is so different?

All that is yellow is one house.

Aren't they afraid someone might climb underneath the fence?

Here's a pretty normal looking house except for the 12 foot or so fence around it.

The town is spread out around the edges and more compact towards the center.

Here is Colorado City, Az/Hildale, UT as seen from Highway 59 on the way to Hurricane, UT.

There are many Large houses in Colorado City. Polygamist families can get mighty big, they need space.

Wonder how many people live in this compound?

Many of the houses remain unfinished, something about the tax code...

House that's big enough to be an apartment building.

Here is the Community College in Colorado City. Wonder if anyone attends who isn't FLDS?

This yard is filled with neatly organized equipment. Wonder what business it's for?

Landscaping is not really a priority for many Colorado City families.

This house was an exception to the 'not so much landscaping,' usual.

Big house, red mountains, lots of space.

Extended body vans, big trucks and SUVs are standard issue for these large families.

These pictures aren't fascinating, but they are here for people who will never have the chance to go Colorado City, themselves.

Here in the center of town, buildings are closer together. There aren't really places for "tourists" or nonbelievers to go to.

Tourist dollars are Not a mainstay for their economy. LOL.

The little kids are very cute. Sorry that all the pictures are from so far away. I had to set the camera on the sports action, quick shoot setting. It always feels dangerous driving through Colorado City, I like to get in and get out.

I liked the silo addition to the house. I could imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair from one of the windows on the top floor.

A little taste of what's to come; Colorado City!

This is one of the most prominent families in Colorado City/Hildale. Perhaps you've read the books of Flora or Carolyn?

The Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints (FLDS) are an industrious people. They have a lot of people to feed.

As you can see, they like their privacy.

This is all ONE compound.

Looks more like an old folks home or hotel than someone's home.

Hildale and Colorado City are in a pretty valley area on the border between Utah and Arizona.

I liked the juxtapostion of prairie dress, modern jeep and cell phone.

There were people out all over, working, tilling, cleaning.

It was cute seeing the children make their own fun. Colorado City is VERY isolated.

Another little reminder of where you are! Another fence to remind you of where you are not supposed to be.

Everyone has large capacity vehicles. Wonder how many it takes to carpool the average family?

There are fields woven through the towns, the area feels quite rural.

Lots of work, especially for women and children.

The UEP on the stone wall stands for United Effort Plan. That's the collective co-op that everyone in town belonged to. No one owned their own home, they were the property of the UEP. The gov. took them to court and changed that.

I was surprised by how much work was still done by hand, and by women and children.

That's one house built for many.

Some of the houses were really nice, with landscaping and ornamentation. Many more stood unfinished looking.

There were many beautiful gardens scattered about the small towns.

More walls, more work.

Industrial areas were interspersed with residential and agricultural plots.

This is looking west nearing the outskirts of town. This was more of an idustrial section.

Nice wide road, pretty view, more fences.

Fuzzy photo of a sister wife in a pretty, lavendar dress. The dresses seem so incongruent for the type of work we saw them engaged in. They usually wore sneakers, go figure.

We saw several of the women in gorgeously colored purple dresses. They were so pretty, I'm surprised they weren't deemed sinful.

All the kids were really sweet looking. SSBUSA and I loved how these girls just seemed like a slice of Americana.

The dress on the littlest girl almost seems too much to handle.

The boys are supposed to keep their arms and legs covered no matter how hot it is.

I wonder what proportion of citizens want to be in this life, and are they free to go, now, post Warren Jeffs imprisonment?

Wonder what the future is for this house, why doesn't someone take it over and put it to use?

That's such a placid, normal looking setting. Hope they're content with their live's.

Burning weeds, a family affair.

They were controlling the fire with the water hose as needed.

There were plenty of tumble weeds up and down the highway, just like the ones that little boy is dragging in.

I liked their hairdoos, they were creative and elaborate. Many of the front doors had little signs that said "Zion" over them.

Here's the bank on the edge of town. Colorado City is circled 3/4 the way with a highway, yet there wasn't as much as a gas station to stop at. It's clear, the FLDS doesn't want anyone else in their towns.

Observing and documenting things you may not otherwise get to see. It's my job! In this case it was OUR job.
